Op-Ed

If you are smart, you should disregard much of what is reported by police departments that adopt a prohibitionist stance on cannabis/marijuana. They have been shown to not only radically inflate estimates of value on cannabis products, but to be flat out dishonest when it serves them. They simply can not be trusted on issues related to Cannabis.

This is unfortunate, but police departments throughout Massachusetts have been working closely with the media to popularize and push their revitalized cannabis/marijuana prohibition campaigns. Stories of people who go to the emergency room after ingesting too many infused edibles are hyped up and touted on corporate local news as the next public health scare, and the horrors of driving after smoking a joint are ridiculously now distorted by police departments to make high drivers sound like the latest traffic scourge. Cannabis distribution is equated with Heroin or illegal drug distribution. Its dishonest. Its immoral. Its also the type of behavior we have come to expect from our leaders in law enforcement, their friends in government, and the corporate mass media.

These propaganda campaigns are old and tired and can easily be seen as an extension of Anslinger’s and then Nixon’s racist, ignorant, and immoral policies of greed.

The Quincy Police Department is making a loud statement that they are against the “devil weed” cannabis, and all of its consumers. The constant focus by law enforcement on trying to re-criminalize the Cannabis Community in Massachusetts is misled and malicious. It should be seen as an attack on the voters of the commonwealth, in a continued nasty turn towards prejudice and ignorance that is sweeping the nation.

The Quincy Police must explain why they have taken this bold and unprecedented decision to continue to attack the voters of Massachusetts, AFTER they have clearly said they no longer want law enforcement to behave this way. Why is there constant pressure from law enforcement to seek every avenue to create fear in our community? Why, after a very clear vote for legalization are Massachusetts law enforcement departments using taxpayer money to negate the will of the taxpayers? These are not the actions of agencies that are looking to build trust and respect but, just as our now President Trump often displays, these actions are designed to sow fear and unease. They do nothing to make anyone safer.

Quincy police seem to be woefully behind in their understanding of the new law, or willfully ignorant. This is not a surprise after what we see nationally though. The continued disrespect and hostility from local police departments and law enforcement, will ensure that the new legal market for cannabis in Massachusetts is only operated by the rich and connected who pay the police their due. They will still be able to criminalize people of color or anyone else that they don’t approve of, regardless of the will of the voters. This is the old system trying to maintain its grip on the market.

What will anyone do about this type of injustice? Once again it is those that are tasked with protecting us that are abusing and oppressing us here so the solution is up to us.

When law enforcement refuses to serve the people they are no longer law enforcement.. They are an ¬†opposing force. That is what Donald Trump seems to be doing. And that’s what our local and state law enforcement does in respect to their treatment of our cannabis community. We know who has had the greatest benefit from the continued prohibition of cannabis. It has always been law enforcement, from the beginning, that has benefited the most from our unjust and immoral drug war and mass incarceration system. With education, our police department leaders would know this, but they have been so busy criminalizing us, they have not paused to consider the morals of their actions.

There is a lot of money in taking peoples rights away. All citizens that find themselves with a police department that is anxious to arrest cannabis consumers, advocates, and leaders, must reconsider applying the moniker “finest” to the the name of their city or state to represent their police department.

“Quincy’s Finest”, does not ring true when you know that they are acting in unison with those that would sow lies and fear.
